Terms of Use

Last updated 2026-07-07

These terms govern your use of this website and the Clearfront open-source software. By using either, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use them. The Clearfront software is also licensed to you under the MIT license, which sits alongside these terms.

1. Acceptance

By accessing this website or downloading, installing, or running the Clearfront software, you agree to these Terms of Use and to our Acceptable Use Policy. If you use Clearfront on behalf of an organization, you confirm you are authorized to bind that organization to these terms.

2. What Clearfront is

Clearfront is an open-source, self-hosted intelligence tool that scans public data sources and helps you understand exposure. It runs on your own machine with your own API keys. It is provided for authorized security research, exposure self-checks, and other lawful, authorized use only. It is a tool, and you are responsible for how you use it.

3. License to use the software

The Clearfront software is released under the MIT license. That license governs your rights to use, copy, modify, and distribute the software, and its warranty disclaimer applies. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the MIT license grants you. Where these terms and the MIT license conflict as to the software itself, the MIT license controls.

4. Acceptable use

You may use Clearfront only for lawful, authorized purposes: your own assets or targets you are authorized to assess. Prohibited uses, and the full policy, are set out in our Acceptable Use Policy, which forms part of these terms. Misuse may lead us to withdraw support, access to any hosted service, or participation in the project community.

5. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old, or the age of digital consent where you live, and legally able to enter into these terms. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you, including where the use of open-source intelligence tools is restricted.

6. Third-party sources and providers

Clearfront works by querying third-party data sources and APIs that you configure with your own keys. We do not control those providers and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy, pricing, or terms. Your use of each source is subject to that provider’s own terms, and you are responsible for honoring them.

7. No warranty

The website and the software are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, and any warranty as to the accuracy or completeness of results. Open-source intelligence can be incomplete, out of date, or wrong, and you should independently verify anything you act on.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Clearfront and its maintainers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from your use of the website or the software. Because the software is provided free of charge and runs on your own systems, our total liability for any claim relating to it is limited to the amount you paid us for it, which for the open-source software is zero.

9. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Clearfront and its maintainers from any claim, loss, or expense, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of the software or website, your violation of these terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, or your processing of data about other people.

10. Intellectual property

The Clearfront software is licensed under the MIT license, and its copyright notices must be retained. The "Clearfront" name, wordmark, and the content of this website are provided for use with the project and may not be used to imply endorsement. All other trademarks belong to their respective owners.

11. Paid services

Any hosted or managed offering (for example a future Cloud or Operator tier) is not yet generally available and, when offered, will be governed by additional terms specific to that service, including payment, service levels, and data processing. Those terms will apply in addition to these.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the date at the top of the page, and your continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England & Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of England & Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory local law gives you other rights.
